Accelerator not working correctly after upgrade to Netbackup 7.7

I need a solution

Anyone else having issues with Netbackup Accelerator after upgrading to version 7.7?

Before all my jobs ran perfect but now some volumes of some clients aren't getting accelerated anymore (optimized 0.0% in job logs)

Wierd thing is that it's only some volumes. Other volumes on the same clients are working properly.

already tried:

- Running a new forced rescan
- Deleted the old tracking log
- Deleted the windows change journal
- Restarted server and client
- Upgraded client to 7.7

all no luck.

When i creat a new policy which back ups the same client and volume the accelerator is working fine ?!?

Anyone else having this issue or have tips to resolve this issue?

Thanks.

List contents of imported backup image

I need a solution

Hi there,

I just imported one backup image which was produced using a different NBU domain. NBU is telling me, using bpimagelist, that the backup image exists (after the Import). Now, I'd like to get a full listing (text that I can redirect to a file) of that backup image's contents, so that I can show it to the owners of the data, and then let them sleep well. bplist is telling me that "no entity was found", even though I try to use it in the simplest of ways (only specifying the dates range and the name of the client). Any ideas? Thanks! :)

Data Domain - reading data from FC and IP written storage units

I need a solution

Hi,

We use Netbackup 7.5 with Data Domain storage and we have SLPs that write weekly and monthly production backups to tape.

Our lan is only 1gb (it's virtually an antique). Thanks to the DDBoost plugin our backup data is deduped and so tha LAN can cope. But since we finished our migration of the production servers to the new Netbackup infrastructure we are struggling to keep up with writes to tape. The backup images on Data Domain have to be reinflated to full size and then cross the LAN to the media server, then across the fibre (8gb) to the tape library.

Some months ago we installed a fibre HBA into Data Domain and tested DDBoost over FC. We successfully set it up on the same server we now use to write the production backup images to tape. I am now investigating if I can use this fibre connection to read from Data Domain to the media server. Then the whole data transfer will be on fibre and not 1gb LAN.

But there is a problem. When you configure DDBoost over FC it creates a new disk pool.  In our case the local Data Domain disk pool was called MB1_BAS, but the new FC disk pool was MB1_BAS_FC. Our fibre connection can only read data that was written by the fibre connection. We cannot see the backup images on MB1_BAS, we can only see the storage units within MB1_BAS_FC.

We can't switch all our servers over to FC as there are many large servers that do not have fibre HBAs. The backup images we want to read are stored on the same Data Domain box in the same format. Surely there is a way to read the backup images through the fibre connection?

Any suggestions?

Thanks

I need a solution

Hello all, I have a quick question regarding setting up NBU BMR. This is what I have done so far. This is all on a RHEL6 server. Ideally, this server is going to be the BMR Master server and the bootserver. I am getting a hangup when I go to create the SRT. Here is what I have done....

-Installed NBU server

-/usr/openv/netbackup/bin/bmrsetupmaster

-/usr/openv/netbackup/bin/bmrsetupboot -r

-/usr/openv/netbackup/bin/bmrsrtadm

At this point, I go to create the SRT, insert a stock RHEL 6 DVD, which it extracts just fine. It then asks for the NBU Client location, which is on the file system. The issue stems up when it goes to install PBX...

Now, it seems to think that PBX is not installed, but when I manually run a rpm -qa | grep VRTSpbx, the system indicates the rpm is already installed (I am guessing it was installed when the master was installed).

# rpm -qa | grep VRTSpbx

Am I doing something wrong here or is this a bug? It seems the PBX install script is failing because PBX is actually already installed.

Thanks!

Restore of Domino Servers no longer working after update to NBU7.7

I need a solution

We recently updated to NBU7.7 on our master server (Windows). We were running 7.6.1 previously, and had no problems at all.

We have several IBM/Lotus Domino 9.x servers running on Linux that are being backed up by this environment. Previously, we were able to restore mail files, as needed. We could use redo logs to do point in time recoveries, if required, but we could always just do a restore of a single .nsf mailbox database to a secondary location with a new replica ID, then manually copy missing emails, folders, etc, if the user did not know when they deleted something. eg. "I know I had it last Friday."

Since the update to NBU 7.7 on the master, when selecting an individual .nsf file in BAR dialog, the "restore" button is grayed out. We only get the "restore" button if we select the entire "mail" directory that contains all mail files. This requires restoring over a TB of total mail databases, which is both time consuming, and pretty ridiculous.

We have been engaged with support since 8/17 with no resolution to this point, beyond them saying "GRT feature unavailable in NBU 7.5, 7.6, and 7.7 Based on research and reviewing the Veritas Netbackup Administrative Guide GRT is not supported. The entire mail box needs to be restore. You can select the entire folder and restore it, but not individual mail boxes." This makes absolutely no sense, as we've never used "GRT", which I assume refers to Granular Restore Technology, as used for say, MS Sharepoint Server, for Lotus Domino. We're also not trying to restore anything more granular than the mail file itself. Also, "The entire mails box needs to be restore. (sic) You can select the entire folder and restore it but not individual mail boxes." seems to be a contradiction. We've also had years of experience doing exactly what it says we cannot do from 5.x through 7.6.1, that is, restoring individual mail boxes. The Admin Guide for Domino also seems to suggest that it SHOULD work.

It seems completely counterintuitive to require restoring the entire mail server to recover a single file. I cannot think of very many people who would accept that an entire fileserver needed to be restored to recover a single file that was overwritten by a user, and I see this as being very similar.

Has anyone had any luck with restoring Domino mail files with NBU 7.7 master server? We've requested escalation, but that has, so far, not gone much better. If this is, in fact, the correct line, and restoration of individual mail files is no longer supported in NBU 7.7+, I can't see it remaining a viable option for our backup and recovery needs.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi All,

I am looking to get the details for amount of data backed up by each and every Media Server per hour for last 24 hours.

I tried to find the default templates for any report which generates the above information, however, was not able to find it.

Can you please help me if we can find this out with any default reports or any custom SQL?

Thank you!

Cannot restore from imported tape

I need a solution

Hi,

We've installed a new tape library into our secondary site. We need to test that the tapes it writes to can be read from our library in the primary site so we took one up there, placed it in the library.

The backup wasoriginally written by dwb004 on 30th Aug, dwb004 is the media server that controls the tape drive on the secondary site. I imported the tape into the primary site library: I went to the catalog, selected Actions\Initiate import, selected the media server bc11n1v1 that can see the primary site library and added the tape name MB2006. The result was:

import1.JPG

When I attempted the seond phase of import I configured the catalog as below but it reported there no images ready for phase 2 import:

import2.JPG

I assumed that this was because the backup images on the tape were not expired, so Netbackup was already aware of them.

Now I am hitting a problem restoring to a server on the primary site called swa009. I set the Netbackup Machines and policy type to:

Server to use for backups and restores:  swm009.corpadds.net (this is the master)
Source client for restores:  dwb004.dcsit.net (where the backed up data was backed up from; dwb004 is also a media server)
Destination client:  swa009
Policy Type: MS_Windows.

The restore util shows me the backups from 30th Aug, I select one file (it's just a test) and start the restore, but get this error:

On the primary site bc11n1v1 is the media server connected to the tape library and I was expecting bc11n1v1 to perform the restore. But dwb004 (the secondary site media server that controls the library there) seems be trying to restore. The primary site tape library TLD(2) knows tape MB2006 is present:

import4.JPG

(Note: bc11n1v1 is the media server that writes to and reads from the primary site tape library but bc20n0v0 is the robot control host).

I set the image on MB2006 as the primary:
import3.JPG

So why isn't the primary site media server bc11n1v1 finding the tape and running the restore?

Thanks for any help!

Error 71 and DFSR writer disappearing

I need a solution

Hi everyone,

I have a very strange issue on a Windows 2008 R2 Enterprise client with DFSR. For the backup configuration I followed the instructions from this link (medium to large environment): https://support.symantec.com/en_US/article.HOWTO65638.html

The backup works fine for a couple of days (sometimes weeks), but then suddenly I got error 71 on the DFSR job and 69/50 on the Shadow Copy Components (from All Local policy) job as below.

When I check the writers on the client (vssadmin list writers), DFS Replication service writer simply disappeared! Then I have to restart DFS services and after 10 minutes the writer is back and the backup works until the next occurence in a couple of days/weeks.

My environment: Netbackup standard 7.7 (RHEL), Netbackup client 7.7 running on Windows 2008 R2 (same problem occurred before upgrading, on version 7.6.0.3)

Thanks for any support!!

SQL restores - still single threaded?

I need a solution

I have had issues in the past with SQL database restores, I run my backups with multiple child jobs, but I have found when I restore that I have to run as a single thread. This means that a backup of 4 child jobs, each taking an hour, backs up in one hour, but restores in four.

To allow for faster restores, we have set up SQL backup directly to disk, and restore from there. We make backups of these flat files for DR purposes.

I am currently on 7.6.0.4 - does anyone know if this issue remains in the newer versions of NetBackup? 7.6.1 or 7.7?

We had a meeting regarding upgrading netbackup from 6.5.x to the latest.

Can't we have the latest NBU software from Symantec without opting/paying for support?

Opting support will cost extra and we don't have that much of budget in pocket.

What we want to happen is for /mydirectory/folders and all directories and files to be backed up-basically everything in /mydirectory/folders and all subdirectories.  Whats happening is we are getting files backed up in /mydirectory/folders but any additional directories within the folders directory is empty when pulling up the restore gui.  Also there are separate file systems within /mydirectory/folders such as /mydirectory/folders/maintenance so

/mydirectory/folders is a filesystem and /mydirectory/folders/maintenance is a separate filesystem.when the backup runs we are seeing this in detailed status:  Is there a way to get around this so we don't have to specify every directory that is a file system under /mydirectory/folders?  The naming isn't consistent across the 1000s of machines out there except for the /mydirectory/folders which is consistent.  Thanks.
