[symantec Netbackup] All Tape drives are not used effectively for Backups

I need a solution

We are running Netbackup version 7.6.2.

We have four drives and all of them are active. But when I just looked at the activity monitor, I found that only 2 of the 4 drives are actually used at any point in time. There are jobs waiting in the queue with a message ‘No Drives available’ even though they are two drives un-used.

I can see the Max Concurrent Drives is configured to be 4 in both Master and media servers.

Even though the drives are shown as not ready, they are being used but the problem is only two of them are used concurrently.

Due to this the backups are lagging behind... 

I am relatively new to Netbackups. Any pointers on what could be the issue and how can I check it up further?

Hi Experts,

NBU master: 7.6.1.2  RHEL65

NBU client: 7.6.1.2    RHEL66

srtiso  RHEL66

I am restoring my RHEL server using media boot.

The server is in grub command line mode now. The possible commands are listed after I entered 'tab'.

Does anyone know what should I do? Thanks!

BMR, questions re PXE boot versus ISO boot...

Master: N5230 v2.6.1.2

Admin host: Windows 2012 (not R2) NetBackup v7.6.1.2

Clients:  Windows 2008 R2, Windows 2012, Windows 2012 R2 - all NetBackup v7.6.1.1

All clients are VMs running in Hyper-V on CSV volumes on Windows 2012 R2 Hyper-V clusters.

My understanding is that for NetBackup Client BMR network PXE boot style recovery that I need certain ports (client to server), specifically UDP/67/bootp, UDP/69/tftp, TCP/445/smb, TCP/4011/altserviceboot, and the typical TCP/1556/vxpbx.

Our security guys are not happy about opening TCP/445/smb, so I was thinking of instead of PXE booting for guest VM client based BMR recovery, to instead use BMR boot ISOs.

My questions:

1) If I go the BMR boot ISO model, then do we still need TCP/445/smb from NetBackup Client to NetBackup Server ?

2) If I go the BMR boot ISO mdoel, then can I also avoid having to open up network firewall ports for UDP/67/bootp, UDP/69/tftp, TCP/4011/altserviceboot?

Hi

We have the Master server on a Windows server and a Media Server on AIX 7.1. We want to update all the Unix Netbackup (Solaris/AIX/Linux) clients version from 7.5.0.5 to 7.6.0.3. I want to update the Netbackup clients version using “update_clients" script from Media server.

is this possible to update Netbackup clients from 7.5.0.5 to 7.6.0.3 directly.

what Netbackup client binaries I need to store on media server to update Netbackup clients directly from 7.5.0.5 to 7.6.0.3.

Can some one share the process of updating  Netbackup clients by using “update_clients" script.

Images Duplication from Tape to Data Domain expire very fast

Hi all,

We has been duplicate images from tape to disk (data domain), because the backup retention in tape are differents from the data domain backup.

So, we can see that the image duplicated to data domain expire after a few minutes.

System Informations:

Netbackup version: 7.6.0.4

Master and Media Server: Windows Server 2008

Data Domain: EMC

someone already had a similar problem?

How do I go about removing a trusted master server when the server is no longer online? Can I simply remove the entry from the bp.conf file? I tried to do it via the console, but it errored saying it couldn't contact the server.

Getting Database Backup Type on a Report

I need a solution

I'm new to OpsCenter and for audit purposes I'm trying to build a custom SQL report that displays backup type.  When I say backup type I mean "full" or "transaction log".

We're using the Microsoft SQL Server NetBackup Database Extension to perform our backups.  Some of these database backups are full and some are transaction log.

The backups are generated by a SQL Server job that executes a PowerShell script.  This PowerShell script builds the appropriate database backup commands and places them in .bch file.

After PowerShell builds this .bch file it calls dbbackex.exe and passes the .bch file to dbbackex.exe.

In other words NetBackup is not initiating these backups.

I looked at using domain_JobArchive.backupType and domain_JobArchive.scheduleType but these values are not correlated to full or transaction log backups.

My current idea for resolving this issue is to create two different sets of policies.  One set of policy names would have the string "FULL" and the other would have "TLOG".  Parsing the policy name would then tell me which kind of backup was done.  I don't like this idea because I will have to maintain two sets of policies.

Does anybody have a better idea for resolving this one?

VSS error in DFS error

We are backing up DFS data from DFS central server.

A total of 37 folders are being replicated to this server. There are few folders with same name (from different branch servers). Hence, folders with same name are backed up using folder name followed by GUID like below.

Shadow Copy Components:\User Data\Distributed File System Replication\DfsrReplicatedFolders\Users (824BCE18-25B0-4DF6-991D-0ABD7A5E8B40-89D8562F-2715-4672-952B-D30C17B8D2BF

However, two replicated folders from the same server are not being backedup. It is failing with below errors.

There are few other replicated folders which do exist in the drive as this one. However, we are still not able to find the corresponding folder for the first error.
What could be the possible issue?

VMware and netbackup: restoring to another vCenter ?

Hello guys,

We are currently considering various DRI possibilities and one of them is related to backup / restore using Netbackup.

The scope is our VMware environment which is backuped at the hypervisor (ESXi 5.5U2) level.
These backup are replicated toward other NetBackup appliances in another country.

Considering we have a dedicated vCenter running in the DRI country, is it supported to restore entire VMs in the remote location using the NetBackup appliances in that location? My concern is that the second vCenter wouldn't know these VM to restore, so I don't know if it's possible or not.

How to find out Highest retetention of Image when SLP is not completed

I need a solution

Can someone please tell me how to find out highest retention of image through command line when the image is in SLP control and SLP is not yet completed.

We have 2 copies of backups. 1st copy with 1 month of retention on local site and 2nd copy has higher retention (greater than 3 months) on remote site.

I tried bpimagelist but it gives retention of 1 copy only and expiration time as 2038 if SLP is not yet completed for 2nd copy. Only when the SLP is completed Image database shows correct  expiration time(highest of two copies).

Not able to add media server in storage server's media server list.

Hi 

we have NBU appliance 5020, running at 1.4.4. It was getting utilised by three media servers of HPUX and 7.6.0.3.
All of sudden, for one media server it has started throwing error 83 (media open error).
We removed that media server from its media server list using credentials Tab in media server, now we are not able to add that media server in its list. It is reflecting error Server is shutdown, howvere everything is up.

I need a solution

We are changing filer providers but we need a way to be able to access backups made on our "old" filer.

The original backups were to tape

Is it possible to run the old filer simulator (VM) and do 3-way ndmp to it via the new filer? Ie tapes attached to new filer, reads the data and sends it to the VM

I need a solution

I have to run NBU on a laptop with 1366x768 resolution.  The only problem I have is with the "Change Policy" window.  You can't see or get to the buttons at the bottom.  Anyway to reduce the size of the java screen?  This is Java 7.6.1.1
